When it comes to superheroes, America has seen quite a lot of them. But there is one particular comic story, later portrayed in animated cartoons, that has got something special. With a varied group of protagonists, X-men is one of the only superheroes stories in which we get in depth with the real feelings of a bunch of persons that suffer from being different, from having special abilities no other human being has and that feel totally rejected from society. The complexity of these characters (referred in the story not as superheroes but as mutants) is summoned up in the sensation they give the audience of a permanent dichotomy between the wishes to be normal, regular people, and the wishes they have themselves to defend their own personalities and way of being. They are special and want to keep on being like that, but also want to become part of a futuristic American society that despise them.

This story takes place in America, in a future moment of history that is not clearly determined but in which we see that regular human beings coexist with these new ways of leaving that have to deal with discrimination and rejection. The most interesting thing about this story is to see how these mutants (that have real names but are known for a nickname that usually refers to their specific power) react towards such situation: many of them, the ones that are under the leadership of Professor X, try to protect that racist society and save them from the other group of mutants which following orders of mutant Magneto, are prepared to cause penuries and suffering to a society that leaves no place for them. This shows the audience that perfection is not possible: while these mutants are troubled persons that want to become part of a normal society but despise it at the same time, just as it does with them, regular human beings are portrayed as racist, fearful, violent and insensitive.

Most of the stories occurs in the mutant academy formed by Professor X in which mutants are taught to discover that special abilities and use them for good purposes. There we see young men and teenagers becoming aware of their different capacities and learning how to use them. Those abilities are called the “extra-factor” and that is why we know these mutants as X-men.
