As a unique and marvelous combination of both Terrier and Mastiff elements, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an impressive dog that will surprise you in many different ways. For instance, its history takes us back to the nineteenth century when it was originally born after selective matings of several Terriers and Bulldogs in the English region that gives it its name. This dog was firstly developed to obtain a stronger breed that could achieve the best results in Bull baiting and pit figthing scenes. Once those activities got banned, the Staffordshire gained utility as hunters, watchdogs, working dogs and companions. Similar to many other Bulldog breeds, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is attractive for its muscular and compact body wich holds a unique strenght and power. The head is really broad and somewhat round with small and folded ears. The muzzle is incredibly strong and the eyes are small in proportion to the rest of the face. They are normally transparent or clear in terms of coloration. The legs are short but also quite strong as well as its neck. As for its coat, it is short and tight to the body, smooth and usually available in many different colors. White markings are allowed. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a medium sized dog but it is of heavy weight and complection, being its average measurements 14 to 16 inches of height and 25 to 38 pounds of weight.
The Sttafordshire Bull Terrier is a strong dog but it is prone to several health complications that may or may not appear through its life. Among them we should mention cataracts, DNA related complications, gas problems and others. These issues can usually be solved if properly prevented or treated by the veterinarian. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier will not do okay without a regular base of exercise. They need daily walks and plenty of activities besides that. If not, they will most surely become destructive and aggressive dogs. Their life expectancy is usually between ten and sixteen years.
The temperament of the Sttafordshire Bull Terrier is similar to the one of most Mastiffs. We are talking about a dog that can easily become passionate about anything: being a watchdog, being playful and being loving. The Sttafordshire Bull Terrier knows no middle notes and will depend on its masters quite a lot since it easily establishes a bond of devotion and dependence with them.
