As most Terriers, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was originally bred to become a marvelous and fantastic dog that could be of great use among farmers. Its history takes us to the beautiful Emerald Island the place where it was firstly created after programmed breedings of several other Terrier breeds. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was really popular in Ireland and then it became quite popular in other parts of Europe and America due to its efficiency in the achievement of great results as a hunter, working dog and even a herding dog. This breed has been recognized by the AKC a couple of decades ago, in the seventies. It also counts with recognition from the most important dog associations.

The appearance of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is of course determined by its abundant and dense coat which is obviously related to the fact that this animal was born in a cold weather. This coat is fairly abundant on the entire body of the animal and when it reaches the face, it covers the eyes almost completely. As for the body of this dog, it is square shaped and with good proportions. Its legs are sturdy and muscular. The tail is long and hairy. The head of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is broad and features a strong muzzle. The ears are long and pendant while the eyes are small and dark. The nose is dark and it stands out not only for its size but also for its color being the coat always white or clear.

The temperament of this dog is similar to the one of most Terriers. They are quite active and alert dogs that can become fabulous guardian dogs and protectors. If not properly attended, they can sometimes become mischievous and destructive, but such behaviors are easily arranged with socialization and love. These dogs do get along really well with children and can even be good with other animals inspite of their natural hunting instincts. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an independent dog with a mind of its own. Still, it will easily develop sentiments of love, affection and loyalty towards its masters. They naturally need to be trained with firmness since sometimes they can become stubborn. Early socialization is, again, one important thing to take into account with dogs like these.

Regular measurements for the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier are 18 to 20 inches of height and 35 to 45 pounds of weight.
