Breed Info

The Siberian Husky is one of the most notorious and beloved breeds of all is that one that looks like a wolf.

It originally gets its name from the Siberian Peninsula. Tribes such as the Chucki, Koryak or Kamchadal are supposed to have given name to this wonderful breed of dogs which is sometimes considered as the oldest breed in history. They are believed to have been taken to Alaska around the beginning of the twentieth century. There, they were used as sledge dogs and they were also used as guides for the other breeds of dogs to follow.

There is a famous fisherman who is believed to have been the one who introduced these dogs in New England. Around the year 1914, he made sure to become one of the key figures when it comes to Siberian Huskies. Puppies and females were taken to him to prepare for races and competitions. He trained them and in the following years these dogs were also taken to Russia. There they were also recognized as wonderful dogs and a Club was formed in their name.

Because of the environment in which they had to develop, these dogs have a thick coat of hair, thicker than the ones of many other dogs. Their traditional colors are the Black coat the white paws and legs.  Their wolf appearance is also due to the environment in which these dogs had to grow up in. Of course, they are smaller than wolves and their temperament has nothing to do with theirs.

They are nothing like a wolf, affectionate, sociable and most important of all, they have no intention of hurting humans. If they are properly trained, you will have no problem in leaving your small children near them. The thing is that these dogs tend to be rather stubborn and may not be easy to train, requiring a professional who can really control them and make the most out of the personality.

As regards health, these dogs have no problems with extreme temperatures due to their thick coat and strong legs. Nevertheless, they may suffer very high temperatures and they will not live comfortably in this type of weather. Eye troubles are among the most common ones, cataracts among the most salient ones. Because of the activities these dogs are accustomed to do, they need diets rich in vitamins, proteins and a lot of exercise to keep them fit and full of energy all day long.
