Green ogres have traditionally fulfilled the place of evil and dirty characters in every prince and princess tale. But what would happen if some day the green ogre became himself the prince trying to attract the princess’s attention and love? Well, this is what the creators of Shrek surely have wondered and to answer that question, they made a terrific movie in which the prince is not the typical tall and good looking guy and in which things are a little crazy and different from every regular fairy tale.
Shrek is the animated story of a green ogre that lives in an enchanted world (called Far Far Away, as in any fairy tale story) but despises it and therefore shuts himself away from it. He doesn’t care about anything and has quite a bad temper, just like any other ogre, with the only difference that deep inside of him Shrek is tender and sweet being.
This funny and really humorous story develops in a fantasy world where all clichés of the fairy tales appear highly satirized. One of those clichés is clearly seen in the character of the princess, who instead of being a delicate and feminine woman is a brave and fiery person who stands against many dangers and that hides a secret that has makes her have little to do with any other regular princess.
Shrek characters are also accompanied in the movie by a very talkative donkey that fulfills the role of the funny and vibrant character that annoys both the protagonists but that in the end becomes essential. Parodies are to be found all along the movie and this is what makes it so special: the irony with which the creators take the ideal fairy tales. They make fun of famous movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Charlie’s Angels, The Matrix, Beauty and the Beast, while also recreating some other visual arts like paintings from Boticcelli.
Shrek characters were released in the year of 2001 as a film made in computer animated graphics. It has been one of the most successful animated films in history and this is the reason why its creators produced a second movie (Shrek 2, 2004) in which some old characters are replaced by new ones and in which the story makes another twist recreating and satirizing the typical prince and princess tales. Shrek 2 will also be followed by a third one that is expecting to be released in the year of 2007. These movies are definitely a good choice for families since they are innocent yet very intelligent and creative. But above all, they are such a good entertainment that you will leave the cinema still laughing.
