Often described as a 'Miniature Lassie', Shetland Sheepdogs have a wonderful temperament and a stunningly beautiful appearance. A popular breed, many owners are unaware of Shetland Sheepdog Growth expectations due to their variations in size.
With no exact set measurements for a Shetland Sheepdog, only an in-depth look into a puppies breed history can offer figures to provide an estimate adult size. The American Kennel Club (AKC), state that a Shetland Sheepdog should be no smaller than 13 inches and no larger than 16 inches at the withers, if intending to show the dog. Whilst it is not unusual for a Shetland Sheepdog to exceed these height measurements (numerous Shetland Sheepdogs have been measured at 15 inches tall within the first 16 weeks of their life), it is less common to see a Shetland Sheepdog fail to meet the minimum size. However it does occur and although some owners worry, there are very rarely any health complications involved.
To ensure your Shetland Sheepdog grows at a healthy rate, an appropriate diet is recommended. Fresh meat and vegetables should be the primary focus, however if this isn't feasible, a high quality dog food with a small amount of kibble should be offered.
