Chinese Dog

This particular breed is original form China as many others. What makes this breed stand out from the crowd is its deep wrinkles.

The name comes from the Chinese name Sha Pi, which when translated would mean something similar to Sand Skin. If you know the coat color of the breed you will immediately realize this is completely true. At that time, this breed was used as guardian dogs or fighting dogs. Due to their tough grabbing, they made their opponents think twice before committing any type of crime.

Apart from his wrinkled coat the color is a beautiful sandy color that makes you want to hug him straight away. Similar to the Chow Chows this breed also has a blue – black tongue, but there is nothing to worry about. This is absolutely normal in this breed.

What is amazing about Shar Pei is its wrinkling coat which covers his complete body. To complete the look his small ears and straight tail make him even more outstanding than any other breed.

As regards health, these dogs tend to suffer from painful eye problems, this infection is called entropion, and may turn the eyelashes inwards, therefore causing a continuous irritation of the eye. Kidney or liver failure may be some of the most common affections these dogs may suffer from, but if treated carefully and responsibly, will not become worse.

Special care must be taken, as you may already have imagined, for his coat. Remember that grooming, brushing and bathing are already necessary for any at least once a week, in the case of this breed even more so, specially with such a coat.

They will be much more comfortable in a house with a yard or garden behind.

The Shar Pei need constant training and exercise in order not to get fat and to keep fit and healthy. Training is not an issue with this breed, but if decided to do, it should be left to the hands of a professional.
