When it comes to talk or think about unique dog breeds, there is no need to say that the incredible Shar - Pei dog comes into the picture really easily. This dog is unique for its skin wrinkles and for its curious face expression. Related in its origins to the Chow Chow breed, it is believed that the Shar - Pei has existed for hundreds of years next to humans in the Chinese Empire. It was used as a multitask dog in farms and in rural environments where it kept cattle and crops protected. There is no clear moment in which these dogs were exported to America but it certainly cause a great impression and transformed into a loved companion dog. It counts with AKC, CKC, FCI, UKC, KCGB, NKC and ACR recognition.
The most distinctive element of the Shar - Pei is its incredible wrinkled skin that has to be properly cared in order to prevent bacteria to form as well as to keep it away from the eyes and the face. This skin is harsh to the touch and there are some varieties of this breed that feature longer hair. The Shar - Pei also features really small ears, expressive and small eyes. The body is square shaped and quite muscular. The head is broad and padded. Average measurements for this breed are 18 to 20 inches tall as well as 40 to 55 pounds of weight.
The Shar - Pei displays a very loving and loyal temperament that makes it a fantastic companion. It is quite active and even though it will do fine in an apartment, it will require lots of exercise and activity. They are great towards strangers and will get along well with other animals and with children if properly socialized. They are intelligent dogs that will make the training easy but will need through the course of their lives a deep and firm leadership.
