The Scottish Dog

if you are looking for a self-confident, hard working and energetic dog but don’t want to sacrifice your space with a large and big dog, you have arrived at the right place.

Today we are going to talk about the Scottish Terrier breed. This beautiful and elegant dog has some typical features and behavior that make him recognizable among other breeds. You need to get to know them a little better since they are not as popular as other dogs such as Labradors, Dalmatians or Cocker Spaniel are. If you are lucky enough to get in touch with a Scottish Terrier specimen you will observe lots of benefits.

In terms of this breed history, there is not really much to say since its origins are not quite clear and well defined. We only have for sure that the first specimens were seen in the British islands. In the sixteenth century they were taken to France where the breed took other typical features. They were breed for hunting activities and in this way they protected sheep or cattle from wild animals of the Scottish and British plains. This activity is the cause of this breed’s strong character and personality.

These pets could be put next to a big dog and will still be majestic no matter the size. The length should be located among 10 to 11 inches and the weight, among 19 to 22 pounds. In the case of Scottish Terrier bitches the weight should be between 18 and 21 pounds. One eye-catching feature is that the head is actually quite long in comparison with the length of the entire body, but this is absolutely normal.

The legs are usually short and the coat is made of a hard upper one and a soft undercoat. This double coat protects them from harsh weathers, although these dogs don’t do well in extremely hot climates. The eyes are well separated and tend to be black or dark besides from the almond shaped look. The ears and tail should be erected. Some health issues might be catarats, skin problems (to avoid these, you should take care of the dog’s coat regularly), fleas, hypothyroidism and cancer of bladder.

In conclusion, this dog will show you its strong and determined personality but if you know how to teach him discipline and respect you will become best friends in a very short time.
