Only a small amount of Scottish Deerhounds excel in Scottish Deerhound Agility competitions. Due to the Scottish Deerhound being a large breed of dog, they struggle with Agility courses because many are created for the smaller breed of dog that has a much smaller stride. The size of a dog's stride is an important factor to consider in dog Agility courses, as some courses are laid out so the breed of dog has to make sharp turns and walk in a low position, for which the Scottish Deerhound breed struggles to do.
Many Scottish Deerhound owners will not train their Scottish Deerhound for dog Agility as many see it as not a suitable pastime. Even though Scottish Deerhounds are a fast and intelligent breed of dog, the courses are simply not suited for them. Instead of Agility, many owners train their Scottish Deerhound to excel in other events such as conformation and lure coursing. These competitions are much more suited to the breed and allow for the Scottish Deerhound's pace and intelligence to be exercised and used to their full extent perfectly.
