A Siberian dog bearing a distant resemblance to a husky, the Samoyed was originally bred by reindeer hunters to protect, help and aid them along their way. Covered in thick, white fur from head to toe, including inside the Samoyed's Ears, it is crucial that these dogs are looked after to the highest standard, from regular grooming to a specialist diet.
One of the main points that must be noted when owning a Samoyed is the particular attention that needs to be paid to Samoyed's Ears. The Samoyed's Ears are quite small compared to other dogs and stand erect in a triangular shape. Compact and appropriate for their breed, they can be prone to a variety of ear infections and regular care must be given to them.
Cleaning the outer area of your Samoyed's Ears on a weekly basis is considered to be a good routine (using a damp cloth, occasionally with a small amount of a home made, organic cleaning solution) as is making note of any change in your dogs behaviour to their Ears. If they begin to itch a particular ear or shake their head rigorously, firstly check inside the ear for any objects that could be safely removed. If the ear is empty, take your Samoyed to your veterinary practice for a thorough check over incase of any serious ear problem, such as Auricular Hematoma or a deep ear infection.
