With a name that already sounds rare and unusual to us, the Saluki is considered to be one of the rarest and most unique dog breeds in the Hound group. This dog features a marvelously interesting history that takes us back to the times of the Ancient Egypt. Early registries of this breed appear in tombs and other documents near the year of 2100 BC. They were obviously considered sacred dogs that only powerful and high rank people could have. As time went by, they also began to become popular among Muslims, who also considered them to be of divine descent. These dogs were used as company dogs and normally fulfilled fabulous hunting and show tasks. Nowadays, they still remain a rare breed of elegance, style and power recognized by most important dog associations including the AKC.
As most hounds, the Saluki can be described as a refined, delicate and slender dog. It features a narrow body with a visible tucked in abdomen, long legs that give it the best running capacities and a narrow and fine head as well. The muzzle is pointy and the tail, unlike most hounds, is quite bushy and long. The eyes of the Saluki display a mystic and somewhat sad expression while the ears are bushy as well and pendant. The neck is really long and the chest is more hairy than the rest of the body. As for the coat of the Saluki, it is a coat of short length, almost tight to the body but not as much as other hounds such as for example the Italian Greyhound. This coat is really soft to the touch and it becomes wavy in certain areas of the body. It can be found in black and tan, white, fawn, gold, red, cream and different combinations of these colors.
Regular sizes for the Saluki are 23 to 28 inches tall and 29 to 66 pounds of weight. They are extremely active dogs that will not enjoy being kept inside a small space and are therefore not recommendable for apartments. Taking them for one or two long walks and providing them with a good open space where to run, jump and play will certainly contribute to their good health. They are also delicate in terms of temperatures and can become quite sensitive to cold weathers. Their life expectancy usually goes from ten to twelve years.
As for its temperament, the Saluki is a noble and gentle creature that displays a deeply affection and devotion towards its masters although they may sometimes be too shy to show it. They are also really loyal and calm, becoming also a good option for families with children. The Saluki is a friendly and well natured dog but it may sometimes feature an independent temperament that should be respected. They are not good to share a house with other small animals since they have strong hunting instincts and early socialization is in this sense extremely important. The Saluki requires a strong and firm leader to follow.
