Saint Bernard Information

Traditionally recognized as one of the most loving and protective dog breeds, the Saint Bernard is a distinctive dog that hardly ever goes unnoticed. The origins of this breed are quite ancient, having the first specimens been registered somewhere near the tenth century in different regions of Italy, Switzerland and France. This breed was believed to be used as a company and rescue dog, especially in areas of extreme temperatures, near the mountains. This is what people usually relate the breed with and is still a great rescue dog that is always ready to come in your help. The breed counts with recognition by the AKC, the FCI, the CKC, the UKC and the KCGB among many other important dog associations.

The Saint Bernard belongs to the Mastiff group of dogs that include some of the largest dog breeds of all. Its regular measurements are 26 to 28 inches tall and 110 to 200 pounds, becoming therefore one of the heaviest breeds. It counts with a powerful and muscular body that is meant to achieve the best results when working. The head is really broad with a strong muzzle and large pendant ears. The nose is dark and large while the eyes usually look sad and truly expressive. One of the most important elements of the Saint Bernard is that it counts with a fabulous sense of smell which helps it direct its rescueing abilities to impressive results. The coat of the Saint Bernard is extremely abundant and dense so as to protect it from cold weathers and snow. It covers the entire body of the animal, especially on the chest and on the tail and its usual colors are white and brown on different shades.

Although they may look brave animals, the Saint Bernard is known to be one of the most noble and tender dogs of all. They are gentle dogs with a well natured temperament and a loyal attitude towards their owners. The Saint Bernard is a protective dog that will always stay by your side. As you can imagine, these dogs are great for families since they love children and other animals although early socialization is always recommended (remember that these are strong and powerful dogs). They are also really intelligent inspite of their heavy appearance, making the training process a real joy. Finally, you must always take into account that large dog breeds like these one require firm and strong leaderships so as to avoid situations in which they can become hard to handle.

The Saint Bernard requires a moderate level of exercise. Unlike most Mastiff breeds, the Saint Bernard can adapt well to living on an apartment given that it counts with all the proper exercise. They are quite healthy dogs that may sometimes suffer skin problems (for which keeping its coat well groomed often is especially important). Some other important health complications are related to the heart and should be therefore properly prevented and treated. Lifespan for these dogs normally goes from eight to ten years.
