There are certain dog breeds that stand out on their own, mostly because some elements are unique and are definitely amazing. Such is the case of the beautiful and impressive Rhodesian Ridgeback. The direct ancestors of this dog have traditionally been a useful company to many South African tribes from immemorial times. Its genetics are a combination of many different breeds that are not officially recognized and that gave this breed a unique number of elements. It wasn't until the beginnnings of the twentieth century that this dog became popular in the Western World, when Dutch colonizers brought it from its native country, Rhodesia. Nowadays, this dog is a marvelous example of energy, strenght and beauty and the breed counts with the recognition of the AKC, the FCI, the CKC and some others.
If there is one word to describe the Rhodesian Ridgeback's appearance, that definitely has to be 'beautiful'. This dog features a mystic and transparent bearing that is combined with a spirit of strenght inherited from its primitive ancestors. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a muscular dog with a slender but strong body, a tucked in abdomen and long legs. The neck is really muscular and strong while the head is square shaped. The muzzle is really powerful as so is the jaw as well. The ears are folded over the head while the eyes are round and transparent with a proud and sophisticated expression. The coat of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is certainly gorgeous: it is tight to the body, short and somewhat harsh to the touch. It is isually available in reddish tones and it displays a unique marking on the back. This is the result of hair growing backwards and it is actually what gives its name to the breed.
As you can imagine, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is not for anyone. This dog was traditionally bred as a hunter and it displays a truly brave and corageous temperament. It is calm and deeply devoted to its family as well, but it certainly requires a strong and firm leader to follow in order to prevent any possible mood change. They are among the most intelligent and intrepid dogs of all and will make of the training process a memorable experience. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a great family dog but only if you make sure that early socialization has made of this dog a gentle and noble animal since sometimes they may play hard on children and on other smaller animals. They require lots of exercise and outdoor activities or they will become highly destructive and hard to handle. If you make sure that this exercise is present, these dogs will adapt well to apartments.
One of the most interesting elements of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is that this is a truly hardy and healthy dog breed which is used to rough climates and extremely hot weathers. It is also insensitive to insect bites and other health complications that may be serious for other dogs. However, it is of course essential for you to provide your Rhodesian Ridgeback with a fabulous health attention.
