A relatively small dog, the Pyrenean Shepherd once - and in some parts of the world still do - worked closely with the Great Pyrenees to herd large flocks of sheep. As they rely on their hearing, Pyrenean Shepherd Ears are an extremely important asset to them and the greatest care must be taken to look after them.
Fortunately, Pyrenean Shepherd dogs are not known to suffer from any hereditary health problems or diseases in relation to their Ears. However, regular care and attention must be taken to ensure no problems do arise at any time throughout their lives. This is a relatively easy process if you have some basic dog health care and hygiene experiences. Starting with checking inside the Pyrenean Shepherd's Ears for any objects that shouldn't be there, this should be carried out on a weekly basis. If anything is inside the ear, the general rule is to remove it. If it's with an area in the ear that it can be picked out, do so immediately, with extreme care. However, if it is deeper within the ear, take your Pyrenean Shepherd to the veternary surgery as soon as possible.
As well as any objects that are in the ear, any discharge should also be treated. However, this is not recommended to be done at home and a Vet should carry out the process, possibly prescribing prescription ear drops where necessary.
