This toy breed is characteristic for its furrowed face and small body.

The origin of its name is under great debate but most people agree that it may come from the Latin, meaning fist. If you look at the dog with that connotation in mind you may associate the meaning to the face he has, it may be said to look like a closed fist.

It originally comes from China, the Shang Dynasty were the ones to be said to own this breed first. They later one appeared in Tibet, Japan, an the rest of Europe.

It was taken to Dutch East Trading Company in the 17th century and because of this the breed become popular among the House of Orange, the Netherlands and its popularity increased. Many of them were painted by Goya, the Spanish painter, but they also appeared in Italy, Germany and France.

The dog is said to have a square body: solid, strong and well developed. In order to know if the breed is original the wrinkles on his forehead should be deep. Their coats are smooth and you can find fawn, black or silver coats. A distinctive feature of the breed is the curled tail over the hip.

Their breed is one of extreme care. Their eyes are extremely sensitive and they can suffer a lot if not taken care properly. They have a tendency to obesity, so watch out for the lack of exercise and type of food you give them. They are vulnerable to extreme temperatures either hot or cold. Encephalitis is the most common and serious affection this breed can suffer from. As there is no cure for this, prevention is the best tool.

So, when you go dog shopping have this in mind to ask for a medical certificate of the dog, since this disease is said to be inherited.
