This dog was originated around the 1500 in Portugal, of course, these dogs were used by the fishermen to help them get things from the water, to guard the ship or to communicate among boats.
They help fishermen with nets, and they were great in helping fishermen when they fell off the boat. Of course now, the breed is famous all around the world.
The hair is cut like as a lion cut. The base of the tail is shaved and the rest of the dog is not. This gives the image of the lion’s coat. As its hair is so long, it had to be cut to allow for the movement of the back legs. AS now breeders want to make the dog commercially available for the market this original cut has somehow changed and it is not the same as it used to be.
Something typical of the Portuguese Water Dog is the different shades of barking you may hear from them . This is because they have a multi – octave voice. This difference makes them unique when you hear all the different sighs, grumbles and barks coming form that same dog.
As regards temperament these dogs are considered to be very special. On the one hand they make excellent company, they make great friends and they are those types of dogs that really enjoy being near its owner. They will follow the master wherever he goes.
On the other hand, when they are bored, chewing may become their favorite activity of the day. So having this in mind, training should be thought as the number one option when it comes to getting a puppy for your little kids. They will feel wonderful with this type of dog and the dog will also feel at ease around them.
Chew toys are another good option for those impatient dogs that cannot help it but start chewing everything around them.
As a way of getting your attention Portuguese dogs will most probably surprise with gifts they bring along to the house so do not be scared , just teach the dog that is not something good to do.
