Poodle Health

As many purebred dogs do, Poodle's are known to have a variety of genetic Health conditions. Poodle Health problems can occur and be apparent from an early age, meaning a lot of them are treatable if diagnosed properly and effectively.

One of the most common Poodle Health problems, shared between all three types of Poodle, is Corneal Dystrophy. In essence, Corneal Dystrophy is a mainly painless disease of the cornea section of the eye that in Poodle's, can occur from an early age and develop very slowly over time into blindness, generally when the Poodle is over 10 years old. Whilst surgical removal of the area affected by the dystrophy is the only medical option, it is not regularly recommend as the dystrophy is likely to return after the surgery.

Not apparent in Toy and Miniature Poodle's, Addison's Disease is the primary Health problem in Standard Poodle's. Regularly misdiagnosed due to its vague, early symptoms, Addison's Disease is a very common hereditary disease, affecting a variety of hormone's and chemicals in the body.

Addison's Disease can, in some cases, cause fatal chemical imbalances and must be treated immediately. Fortunately, with regular prescribed medication throughout their lifetime, most Poodle's continue to live an otherwise healthy life.
