Being one of the most gracile and funny dog breeds of all, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi may easily appear to most people as a simple and not completely pure breed. However, it is certainly one of the oldest and most amazing dog breeds that also counts with recognition of many important dog associations such as the AKC, the CKC, the FCI, the UKC and the KCGB.
The history of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is quite ancient, existing registries of this breed that take us back to the XIIIth century. Born in Wales as a fabulous herding dog that could reunite and protect cattle over several types of dangers, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has been confused with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi for years and even though they are similar breeds, there exist quite a few differences. Its name comes from the fact that it was originally bred in Pembrokeshire, Wales. This dog has been the favorite of the Welsh and English nobility for centuries, owning the Queen Elizabeth II some specimens.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi features a truly distinctive and peculiar appearance. This appearance is determined by its square shaped body in which height is smaller than its length. Regular measurements for this breed are 10 to 12 inches tall and 25 to 30 pounds of weight. The entire body of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is covered with a short and smooth coat which is really easy to groom. This coat is quite shinny and can be found in different colors, mostly red, brown, black, tan, sable and fawn. White markings are usually accepted.
Other important features of the appearance of this dog are the V shaped ears which are normally erected but that can be slightly folded in some occassions. While the Cardigan Welsh Corgi features a long tail, this breed features almost no tail at all. The eyes are proportional and truly expressive, normally in dark colors. The legs of these dogs are really short and the feet, as well as the neck, are very strong. Life expectancy for these dogs is around 12 and 15 years and this obviously depend on the quality of life these dogs count with.
The temperament of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is quite pleasant and interesting. We are talking about a small and short dog that can build up strong bonds of loyalty and affection with its owners. This is why, inspite of its size, it can become a truly brave and protective dogs. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi shows no fear when it comes to defending its family. They are also really intelligent dogs that will respond really well to training. They are quite great with children and other animals, but early socialization is always recommended. As for exercise, they are obviously quite active, as most herding dogs. They can be kept inside apartments thanks to their size, but a daily walk is always a good idea to keep your Pembroke Welsh Corgi healthy and happy. Sometimes, they may suffer from overweight if not properly fed and exercises.
