The Pekinese

As its name may suggest this breed comes originally from China. They were considered the Emperor’s pet. Because of this, they were raised to be kept by the Imperial family.

They were even revered in ancient times, similar to what happened to cats in the age of the Egyptian emperors. They were believed to be a guardian spirit, they were thought to look like lions, therefore, they were thought to be of great inner strength.

Even though this breed originated more than 2000 years ago, they have not changed much as regards appearance. They keep their long hair and the coat of a spaniel.

The standard size tends to be from 15 to 23 cm, and the weight cannot be more than 14 pounds.

Pekinese dogs are considered to be stubborn and jealous, similar to cats, many people say. And that is what may happen if you call him and expect him to come and answer your call. They will not normally become aggressive but under some particular situations they may turn into those barking annoying dogs you may have seen in cartoons.

They present no problems when they are socialized since they are born. They make friends easily and they are really loyal dogs.

They make good companions, especially among old people. This is a great dog for people, since it does not require a lot of attention, in the care sense, and can be controlled easily because of its size. For this reason, it may not be a good dog for a family, they tend to like being around one person only, and they do not get along with children in general.

Training may not be one of his favorite hobbies, but if it becomes a habit, they can improve.

Their main problems as regards heath can be eye or breathing problems. they may develop ulcers in the eyes if not taken care properly. And if they get dirty it is important to get him cleaned as quickly as possible. It will be twice as difficult to remove the dirt later on.
