With its large frame and menacing looks, a Neapolitan Mastiff About the home will be a deterrent to most intruders. Whilst this is an excellent trait for use as a security dog, the Neapolitan Mastiff is a loving dog who makes an ideal companion to their owner and family.
Still used regularly as a guard dog today, the Neapolitan Mastiff's history is said to be one of military battles and violence. Many historians believe the Neapolitan Mastiff was used by Roman armies, when they had a harness of upturned metal blades placed upon their back and trained to run under enemy horses, effectively disemboweling them instantly.
Used in a less violence oriented role in the modern world, many Neapolitan Mastiffs are employed as security dogs to watch over their owner's property. Very rarely attacking an intruder, they will bark extremely loudly and move towards the suspect, which is almost guaranteed to scare them away.
As a non-sporting breed of dog, the Neapolitan Mastiff will not require lengthy, daily exercise. A regular walk of around 20 minutes will suffice the breed, as long as they have access to a garden area where they can walk and roam freely.
