Herding dogs are not only our helpers: they are above all our beloved companions and being able to enjoy their presence is certainly a privilege. There are many incredible herding dog breeds but few of them can be as amazing and as unique as the Miniature Australian Shepherd. With obvious links to the regular Australian Shepherd, this breed was the result of careful and programmed breedings in which small specimens where used in order to create a smaller new dog that could fulfill herding tasks from a different place. The Miniature Australian Shepherd is quite new since the first specimens were born near the seventies. This is one of the reasons why this breed still does not count with recognition by major dog associations.
Even though there exist Miniature, Toy and Teacup Australian Shepherds, the ones that interest us today are only the first ones. Regular sizes for this breed are 13 to 18 inches of height and 20 to 40 pounds of weight. The appearance of the Miniature Australian Shepherd is identical to that of the standard size. This is a square shaped body with short but strong legs and a wide neck. The head is square shaped as well, with folded ears, a strong muzzle and transparent or dark eyes depending on the coat coloration. The tail is furry and slightly curved while the nose can also vary with the color of the hair. The coat is quite abundant and truly soft, covering the entire animal. It is usually more abundant on the chest and on the neck and regular colors for it might be blue, red, tri-color, black, tan and always white markings.
Unlike the standard sized Australian Shepherd, the Miniature specimen is approved for apartments. This dog is quite active but will do okay with a couple of daily walks. They have to be kept entertained in order to prevent destructive or aggressive behaviors. Plus, they always need human company and attention. Some of the colorations existing for this breed may imply deafness or blindness so making sure you provide your dog with the best health attention is essential. Average lifespan for this dog is between 12 and 13 years.
The temperament of the Miniature Australian Shepherd is quite similar to the one of the original one. They are really well natured animals, eager to please and to make you happy. They love being around humans and having a trustable leader to follow. Plus, these dogs are great for children since they are patient, affectionate and protective, like most herding dogs. It is important for you to keep them amused so they can display their real personality: full of energy, happiness and joy. They are easy to train since they are quite intelligent. The Miniature Australian Shepherd can also get along really well with other dogs and animals since it is in its nature to establish respectful and loving relationships with everyone around. However, early socialization will never be a bad idea and it will also help you develop stronger bonds of love and loyalty.
