The English Mastiff is the largest of the Mastiff breed. A fully grown male English Mastiff can reach 30 inches in height at the shoulders and can weigh anywhere between 160 and 230 pounds. With a long and proud history, the English Mastiff has been used as a guard dog for many years and many people believe it to be one of the top ten guard dogs of all time. The English Mastiff is a very protective and loyal dog to its owner and will go to any lengths to protect them. Unfortunately, the English Mastiff is prone to developing bone cancer. Similarly, the Brazilian Mastiff also falls into the group of excellent guard dogs and like the English Mastiffs, they are gentle with their owners and family but can be fierce when faced with strangers. The Brazilian Mastiff needs to be well trained and supervised from a very young age to prevent any unwanted behaviour and as they are a powerful, fearless dog breed, they can be unsuitable first time dog owners.
