The shape and style of Mastiff Ears depend on the breed of Mastiff that is owned. However, in most Mastiff breeds the Ears are often large in comparison to their head size and hang down along the side of their face.
A common health problem that can occur in any Mastiff is an inner ear infection. These can usually be treated by a dose of prescription ear drops, prescribed by a local vet. However, it has been known in a small amount of cases that an ear infection has persisted and surgery has taken place. In general, there should be no need for surgery if regular cleaning of the Mastiff's Ears takes place and a thorough drying routine is carried out afterwards.
It is recommended that when grooming a Mastiff to make sure that there is no hair in the Mastiff's Ears that can be causing irritation or blocking the ear. If this is the case, the groomer should gently fold back the ear and remove any loose hair. Carrying this out weekly help prevent any hair resting in the ear to cause the dog both discomfort and unnecessary stress.
