Labrador Retriever Training

When we get any type of dog breed, one of the most important things we need to think about is giving him a careful but firm training to avoid any complications related to the behavior in the future. Since it is strongly believed that the best moment for a dog to learn manners, orders and some attitudes is when they are puppies (so that what he gets since then will serve him through all of his life), you must not spend too much time when you get a puppy until you start the training process.

Labrador Retriever is a breed that perhaps most of us consider that doesn’t need any training since its quite calm, relaxed and affectionate. But this is a wrong position to take: every breed needs early training to avoid aggression, bad behavior or lack of self control.

One of the first things to teach them is to get used to the daily and family routine. It is of extraordinary importance for him to know where to eat, where to sleep and where to pee. Family schedules are also something to teach them and above all, his own: marking him when the eating, the playing or the sleeping time is something that needs to be firm since the Labrador Retriever is a puppy. If you get to do this at an early age, he will respect it for the rest of his life.

You would also be amazed to see how well puppies develop in routines schedules and this will make the training process definitely easier. Apart from that you need to teach your Labrador the sound of some meaningful words such as “No”, “Easy”, praise him when he does something good with words such as “Good!” or “Well done” and to teach him command through words like “Sit”, “Stand”, “Lie down” or “Stop”. Calling his name frequently is another important thing to assure that he learns his name and knows when people is referring to him. Remember that gentle training always makes better results and that violence of any kind should never be done to train any animal.

Exercise is another important part of the Labrador Retriever training process and since Labrador Retrievers tend to get big when they grow up (which they do quickly) it is better for you to teach them to control their body as puppies. Practice exercises with your Labrador everyday at different times of the day and give him the chance to know the place where you live without losing track of him. Get the dog used to a particular type of calling sign so that you can be sure that he will respond to it whenever you need to. Socialize your Labrador since puppy with children and other pets if you want to have them all in one place. They are loving and truly affectionate and this early socialization will avoid any uncontrolled attitude or unexpected aggression.

These are just a few facts about Labrador Retriever training. From here one you can decide whether is right or wrong for him and you can even consult a specialized Labrador trainer to get deeper information. Good luck!
