The Labrador retriever breed was originated in Canada, more specifically in Newfoundland State, around 1700s. Earliest specimens were found in England in the nineteenth century.

This fact is the reason why there are two different types of Labrador retriever: the American and the English one. Even though they are quite similar and they could never be considered different breeds, there are certain body features that make them recognizable. This breed was originally brought up to carry out working activities such as helping hunters, but nowadays Labrador retrievers are useful for a huge variety of jobs.

The American type is in some way stylized, while the English one tends to have stronger muscles and bones. The length of this dog might go from 22 to 24 inches (21 to 23 if female dogs) and the weight should be around 65 to 80 pounds in male dogs (ten pounds less in case of bitches), even though this breed has tendencies to suffer some minimal overweight. Labrador retrievers should be of three particular colors: black, yellow or chocolate.

These colors may have slight variations from lighter to darker tones, but any other color apart from those is considered erroneous. They may also have a big white spot in the lower chest. This dog’s coat is double: the upper one being strong and firm, while the lower one is much softer and protects the animal from extreme weather.

This under coat is truly important because this dog is often used to work in the water or in different climates. It should be constantly groomed and taken care of. With this you also avoid hair problems.

The Labrador retriever has a big head, plus a broad neck and strong and short legs. The eyes may be of light brown or hazel color and the ears are pendant (not completely at sides). The health problems this breed may tend to suffer are hip dysplasia (and sometimes elbows as well) and from time to time eyes disorders, but they are not as serious as diseases such as heart conditions other breeds show.
