The beautiful looking Komondor was once bred purely for work purposes, primarily in the farming industry as a sheep dog.
Deriving from Hungary in Europe, the Komondor generally grows to around 27 inches in height and has an average weight of 75 pounds, making it a perfect choice for its work routine - a solid structure but with a light enough weight to be able to work all day.
The reason Komondor's were used as sheep dogs before any other form of work is due mainly down to their unique Coat. It's long, rough texture but soft appearance often gives the Komondor a look of a sheep, especially when amongst a large flock. For the sheep themselves, it ensures they aren't overly afraid of the dog and for any predators looking to move in on any of the sheep, they are unaware that there is a large, powerful and strong dog waiting to protect the flock if necessary.
Whilst the Komondor's make fantastic working dogs and can make great companions, they are not the ideal family pet due to their working nature and amount of time that needs to be spent looking after them (for example, their Coat needs regular attention and obedience training from a young age is a must). However, with the right amount of training, dedicated care and large amounts of grassland, the Komondor could fit comfortably into a lot of family lives.
