The Jack Russell Terrier is generally seen as one of the smallest breeds of dog today. Unlike many other dogs that grow at a steady rate until reaching their optimum size at 12 months, Jack Russell Terrier Growth is noted as being around six months slower.
Born as tiny puppies with very minimal weight, they gain several ounces of weight over the next few weeks and should weigh a healthy 3.3lbs by two months old. Already gaining in height, the Jack Russell will continue growing, both in height and in weight, at a regular speed over the following 16 months. By the time the Jack Russell is 18 months old, they should be fully grown and stand between 10 and 15 inches at the withers, weighing in at approximately 14lbs. However, it is it not uncommon to see a Jack Russell Terrier's being considerably smaller. These are occasionally considered as a separate breed, with a similar Growth rate but only reaching around 9 inches tall.
Jack Russell's are renowned as small dogs and their Growth rate is matching. Whilst it may be slower than other breeds of dogs, an appropriate diet with sufficient exercise should ensure the Jack Russell grows to its known potential.
