The Irish Terrier breed of dogs are often described as 'compact' dogs - moderately small but full of energy and vigour. This is due partly down to the Irish Terrier's Weight and general size. The official recommendation for the ideal Irish Terrier size is that both male and females should grow to no more than 48cm at their shoulders and shouldn't weigh any more than 27lbs.
However, these recommendations were made many years ago and as with humans, dogs, including Irish Terrier's, have increased in size Century upon Century. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see an Irish Terrier weighing in at 33lbs and standing 5cm taller than the recommend height at 53cm. In fact, it is now considered rare to see an Irish Terrier with the Weight the official recommendation states.
It is important to maintain an Irish Terrier's Weight and to not let them gain too much Weight or lose too much Weight over any given period. Whilst they enjoy quiet time inside, they are considered quite an athletic breed and therefore need a good quality food to give them enough energy to meet their genetic characteristics.
