Irish Names for Dogs

Naming your dog is not an easy thing. The name you put to your dog speaks not only about your pet, but also about you. About the way you see the world, about relationships and about the relationship with your dog in particular.

How you name your dog will also determine the way people approach when it is presented.

It is worldly known what dogs mean in Irish heritage. They take part in every story or myth of Ireland. That is why when someone decides to put an Irish name to a dog, the name has an extra meaning. So, as well as every mother an father look for the meaning of the name they want to put to their baby, every dog owner can look what the dog is going to transmit by its name. Irish dog names are not common ones. They carry a lot of history behind, so be careful with what you choose!

Let´s start. Irish myths have lots of heroes and gods. Abarta, could be a great name for a male dog, remembering an Irish god, as well as Amaet, the short name of Amaethon, a god that protected agriculture. If your dog is not big in size and is very beautiful Aon (from Aonghus) would be the name that best adapts with him, because he was the young Irish god of love and beauty. For females, Ainé, meaning goddess of love, fertility and passion or Banba which symbolizes sovereignty could be great names. If you have got a protector female dog, the perfect name should be Boann. She was the water goddess, which slept until her town needed her help and called her. Finally, if there is a pregnant woman in your family, do not doubt in naming your dog Brigit, the pregnant women protector.

There are more words that describe dogs’ character, with special meanings in Irish culture. Cara, for example, more adapted to a female dog, means friendly and Tullia, quiet and peaceful. Lana or Kyla mean attractive, and Tressa represents the strength. For male dogs, Kelly, means a warrior, a protective dog and Kasey, a brave one.

If you want to put a name to your dog that describes it physically, Bannon, means white and Carey or Tynan, dark. Flynn, means dark red and Donn or Dun brown. Finally, Rua, is a type of red. If you have got a small dog, do not doubt in naming it Cargan, Egan, Madden or Ryan.
