It is believed that the Havanese breed was created around the 1800. One of the most peculiar things of this breed is that it was originated in Cuba as the accidental breeding of several dog breeds brought by Spanish colonizers. This is the reason why the Havanese has its name: it makes clear reference to the capital city of Cuba, the Havanna. Although in many occassions it almost became an extinct breed, thanks to the exportation of specimens to other parts of the world, this breed continued existing and became each time more and more popular as a companion dog. The Havanese counts with the proper recognition of the AKC, the CKC, the FCI, the UKC and the KCGB among others.

When it comes to the appearance of this breed, we must talk about its incredible coat. It is of an important length and it sometimes falls to the floor covering the dog's feet. This coat is also very soft and silky. Regular colors for it are white, different tones of gray, black and even chocolate or brown. Depending on each specimen, the hair might be more or less wavy (in some cases it can get to be really curly, almost like a Poodle dog). Of course, proper and constant grooming in this case are truly important not only because of beauty matters but especially in terms of health and comfort for your dog.

Regular measurements for a Havanese are between eight and eleven inches of height and seven to thirteen pounds of weight. This small dog is ideal as a company dog and it live perfectly well in apartments. The Havanese is fully covered in abundant and long hair and this is why it is sometimes difficult to really distinguish its physical features. The body is low and short, with a square shape and an equally short neck. The eyes and nose of the Havanese are always black or dark while the ears are small and fully covered with hair. The life expectancy of this breed is around fourteen and fifteen years, quite a lot for such a small animal.

The temperament of the Havanese is of great interest: this is a marvelous and loving dog that is capable of building a strong bond with its master and its family. They are fabulous with children and love human company. These dogs are also really intelligent and the training will surely be an enjoyable experience. They can immediately identify themselves with the leader so training them through a firm and responsible method will always have the best results. The Havanese is not an aggressive dog but will not respond properly to other animals if it hasn't been correctly socialized to them as a puppy.
