The Great Pyrenees were originally bred as working dogs. They have adapted to the many different weather conditions that they have worked in and the Great Pyrenees Coat is a prime example of these adaptabilities.
As the Great Pyrenees are from the Pyrenees Mountains district in Southern France, which is known to suffer from serious weather conditions, their Coat is that of extreme thickness. Providing them with an extremely warm layer, it is a double-layered Coat. The outer Coat that can first be seen has a rough feel to it, full of natural vitamins, minerals and oils and gives the dog a fantastic waterproof layer. The undercoat is one that is much thicker, with a wool like feel to it, providing the Great Pyrenees with amazing heat insulation.
To look after a Great Pyrenees Coat effectively, regular grooming is necessary. Their thick fur requires a specialist brush and appropriate toothed comb that will be able to cope with the masses of fur that the Great Pyrenees possess. Cutting out any objects that have been caught in the Coat, a regular amount of grooming will ensure a Great Pyrenees's Coat stays in the most perfect condition.
