Easily recognized as one of the largest dog breeds of all time, the Great Dane dog is certainly an impressive and majestic dog that should be correctly trained and handled. This dog is considered to have accompanied humans for hundreds of centuries since there are elements that prove their existence even with ancient Greeks. Still, they were highly popular in Germany in the Middle Ages and they have always become of Great interest for breeders across Europe and America. Unlike the name says it, they are not related to Denmark but to the Germans. This breed was used for many different purposes and it now counts with recognition from the AKC, the FCI, the CKC, the UKC and many others.
When it comes to the physical structure of this dog, its giant size is the main element that catches our attention. Its measurements go from 30 to 34 inches tall and 120 to 200 pounds of weight. Their body is robust and sturdy, with a strong and muscular structure, a tucked in abdomen and a large head that ends in a square shaped muzzle. The ears are erected and really large while the legs are of course long and super strong. The Great Dane features a short and shinny coat that is somewhat soft to the touch. It can be found in colors such as brindle, black, blue, white, fawn, mantle harlequin, merle and others. The eyes are expressive and large.
The life expectancy of this dog is usually below ten years, which is quite a small number for such a large dog. They are strong willed but gentle and noble. Inspite of their brave and ferocious image, they are deeply sweet and affectionate. They are of course Great watchdogs. They love human company and it is important for you to train your Great Dane properly in order to make of the maneuvering moments much easier. They are good dogs for children but are obviously not recommended for apartments.
