If you are trying to find the perfect dog that features a deeply elegant and refined bearing, you must definitely consider the amazing Gordon Setter breed. Native from Scotland where it was bred as a fine and unique gun dog in the early sixteenth century, the Gordon Setter has also been used as a hunter, watchdog and guardian in many occasions due to its hard working and devoted temperament. It has always been related to nobility but as time went by it also became a marvelous companion for families. It is nowadays recognized by the AKC, the CKC, the FCI, the UKC, the KCGB, the APRI and the ACR among others.
One of the most interesting things about the Gordon Setter is that it is a truly healthy breed that displays a life expectancy of around ten to twelve years. Its measurements usually go from 24 to 27 inches tall and 55 to 80 pounds of weight, becoming therefore a medium sized dog. This dog features a muscular but refined body which is fully covered in abundant hair. The head displays a visible stop and a well defined muzzle. The ears are long and pendand while the eyes are oval and dark. The coat is smooth to the touch, wavy and really glossy, parameters that can be used to determine the dog's health conditions. Colors are only black and tan.
Finally, when it comes to temperament, the Gordon Setter is an extremely loyal and obedient dog that will perform a fabulous working attitude. They are really active dogs that are not recommended for apartments since the lack of exercise can certainly damage their health. They are great with families but can sometimes be suspicious of strangers and of other animals if not properly socialized. As most gun dogs, they require a strong and firm leader.
