These giant dogs have a thick, dense coat on the outside and a softer coat underneath. The colour can be either black or spotted. The weight should not be under 99 pounds, because if it is below it will not be considered as a standard of the breed .
Whenever they are jogging, or running, the Giant Schnauzer will have to track singly. The back should remain rigid and flat .
These dogs are ideal for companions or home dogs. They are not considered solid guardian dogs because they tend to get distracted easily. Though they are intelligent and quite smart, obedience may turn up to be problem if not trained properly.
Due to their size they need to exercise, train and practice some sports on a regular basis. For this same reason, an energetic, active owner is required to follow suit. If it is not your style you may consider the possibility of hiring a personal trainer to take him out daily to make him rest and be fit when he goes out.
Giant Schnauzer become friends easily, therefore they are loyal and they are attached to the family members without difficulty. They may follow you all day long if they are too loveable.
As regards their health these dogs are generally thought to suffer from arthritis. Specially on shoulder and hips. Their life expectancy is from 11 to 12 years.
Diseases such as epilepsy, hip dysplasia, incontinence and toe cancer are very frequent and they require special treatment as well. Auto immune diseases such as Hemolytic Anemia are very serious and need to be treated with a true professional.
