The History of the Giant Schnauzer is one that isn't entirely clear. Whilst some of their History, such as where they derived from, is very easily traceable, there are various different accounts of the most recent Giant Schnauzer History.
The Giant Schnauzer's origins can be traced back to the mid 1800's, when German shepherds and cattlemen needed a dog that had the obedience and security characteristics of the Standard Schnauzer, but with a larger frame. Careful breeding with a variety of large dogs, including the Great Dane, eventually produced their ideal dog.
Whilst the Giant Schnauzer was a model dog for working purposes, their increased size meant that their stomach size had expanded substantially and the dog was therefore in need of greater amounts of food. This was often a problem with owners of smaller farms and many reverted to using the Standard Schnauzer. Due to this, many Giant Schnauzers became popular as working dogs in other capacities, such as security and military dogs.
The Giant Schnauzer History becomes somewhat translucent when the breed began to become popularised in America. No set account has been noted of when the Giant Schnauzer breed travelled across the Atlantic ocean for general purposes, however as some breeders were said to have transported several Giant Schnauzers to America throughout the late 1920's, this period is regularly cited as the time Giant Schnauzers were brought to America.
