The functional and wiry German Wirehaired Pointer Coat is the breed's most recognisable feature. Weather resistant and with a waterproof outer Coat, the German Wirehaired Pointer's Coat has been developed through years of breeding to ensure it meets the breed's health requirements. The German Wirehaired Pointer's undercoat is barely visible, however it serves its purpose fantastically. In the summer months, it allows for enough fresh air to enter the body, but also acts as a type of sun block, ensuring the dog does not suffer from serious heat stroke. Likewise, in the winter months, the thick undercoat acts as a woolly over garment, keeping out the cold and maintaining a health body temperature. The German Wirehaired Pointers outer Coat is of a wiry feel and appearance and acts as a protection barrier against any foreign objects, such as insects, that are trying to gain access to the dog's boy. In general, the Coat of the German Wirehaired Point is long in length, particularly on the body. Towards the dog's paws and head, the Coat becomes somewhat shorter, but is particularly dense around the more vulnerable areas, such as the withers and tail area.
