Originally bred for use as a working gun dog - for which they excelled at throughout the late 1800's - one of the many German Wirehaired Pointer Adoption centres are now centres where people looking for a family dog frequent.
The breed's temperament is one of extreme affection and high energy levels. German Wirehaired Pointers love nothing more than being taken for an extensive walk, where they can run around freely, followed by a calm and relaxing sleep at the feet of their owner.
As the German Wirehaired Pointer was bred for use as a gun dog, they are an extremely energetic breed of dog. This should be taken into consideration when adopting a German Wirehaired Pointer, as they will need regular exercise. A large back garden will not suffice, as they need a wide, open space where they can run and roam freely.
Furthermore, as a gun dog, they became extreme loyal companions. Due to this, some German Wirehaired Pointers are occasionally somewhat hostile to people who aren't their owner or their owner's family. Whilst they are very unlikely to actually cause any physical harm, they may bark or refuse to go near the stranger.
