Training is not only useful for such causes (although it is highly recommendable for them) but also to guarantee a good and respectable performance towards the tasks for which the dog is needed. Right now we are going to give you some information about training for German Shepherd dogs.
In the first place, there are some debates about the right way to train a German shepherd dog. In this sense, expert trainers avoid methods such as violence or constant reward.
This is because both of them are extreme and don’t assure good results since they don’t make the dog really learn the tasks and obedience in a good and durable way. Using violence in any training method is absolutely wrong and it will only produce a fearful and timid dog as well as aggressive and violent behavior in response to that fear.
The reward method is an option from time to time but you must take into account that it will generate selfish and somehow opportunist dogs who will only do the tasks needed in case they consider the reward is enough.
The dog’s owner must understand that the dog won’t do things he was never trained to do, so in that way you must be patient and teach him exactly what you consider useful and let him know when he is doing the right thing or not (not through the use of violence but through correctives).
It is not sensible to get angry with your dog if he is not reacting to something he never learnt. Another important thing to know is that the correction must be applied in the same moment that the dog commits the fault so he may be able to relate the mistake with the correction. The dog needs to know who is in charge of the situation: if there is a slightly doubt of the owner’s authority the dog will not learn to obey him in any other moment.
