Easily confused with the Doberman breed for its similar appearance, the German Pinscher is one of the most devoted and loyal guard dogs to be found. Its history takes us back to the nineteenth century and even to earlier centuries in which it was bred in Germany to become a great gun and guard dog. It is believed to be a combination of the best elements of breeds like the Miniature Pinscher and the Schnauzer. It is officially recognized by the AKC, the CKC, the FCI, the KCGB, the NZKC and others.
The German Pinscher features measurements such as the following: 16 to 19 inches tall and 25 to 35 pounds of weight, becoming therefore a medium sized dog. It is an elegant breed with a strong and muscular body, refined legs and a semi tucked in abdomen. The tail and the ears are usually docked and carried erect or straight. The coat of the German Pinscher is extremely shinny and soft to the touch. It can combine black, fawn, and brown colorations in different ways.
There are no major health concerns when it comes to the German Pinscher breed. It is a healthy breed although you will need to provide these dogs with an interesting amount of exercise and outdoor activities. They are good for apartments as long as exercise is a part of their daily routines because if not they can become aggressive and mischievous animals. Their life expectancy is between twelve and fourteen years.
The temperament of the German Pinscher is determined by its bravery and its courage. They are hard working dogs, versatile and stable. Plus, they can easily develop a strong bond of loyalty and love towards their masters. They are not barkers but will make you understand their thoughts through their behavior. They feature a strong temperament and this may sometimes be the cause of complications when in presence of other dogs or animals if not properly socialized.
