Smooth Fox Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier

We will talk about the Fox Terrier, not the Fox Terrrier, with three "r".

These dogs were breed mostly in England in the nineteenth century as hunting dogs. In this sense, the fox hunting for which they were brought up is the reason of its name and they are also known as “Foxie”.

This lovely dog breed is one of the most popular among companion dogs. These dogs are easily recognizable because of their particular features and appearance. They were used to prevent sheep from being attacked by foxes and other wild small animals. They are related to many different dog breeds and the Terrier is a special breed family. While the Smooth one shows a soft, short and straight coat, the Wire one is probably the more popular of the two and has a pretty identifiable coat made of twisted, dense and almost curly hair. The rest of the features of this dog breed are quite similar.

The bones and muscles are well defined. The head tends to be a bit bigger in proportion with the rest of the body and should be narrowed as it reaches the snout. The jaws are strong and its bite can be quite painful since it was used to chase and hunt animals.

The eyes are small, rounded and black and give the dog an intelligent appearance. The ears fall softly upon the top part of the head and should not be hanging. The height should be 15 inches and up, while the weight should be from 18 pounds. The coat is made of dense and hard hair in both cases, and the acceptable colors are tan, black or brown. In the case of the Smooth Fox Terrier white color should be predominant among the other ones, while the Wire Fox Terrier can be found in white and brown predominance.

There should not be bared spaces on the body. The grooming is important in this second case since you need to take care of the coat to avoid infections, bruises and other skin issues.

The temperament of these dogs is quite interesting since they can behave perfectly as companions, guardians, workers, etc. They are affectionate and love to be around humans and children. They are also intelligent but can get stubborn and dominant from time to time.
