With such name, there is no place to doubt that the English Springer Spaniel was originally bred in England. This dog is considered to be the founding father of most Spaniel breeds since there are registries of its existence that take us back to the Renaissance when it was used as the most loyal and effective hunting dog. Of course, it was always related to nobility and high classes until it spreaded through the world and especially through America. Nowadays it is used mostly as a family pet and recognized by the AKC, the CKC, the FCI, the KCGB and many others.
Counting with a life expectancy of around twelve to fourteen years, the English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized dog that normally measures 19 to 21 inches tall and 45 to 55 pounds of weight. They feature a sturdy and muscular body that is square shaped. They display an elegant and refined bearing as if they were proud of themselves. These dogs have a strong body and strong legs, a square shaped head and long, pendant ears which are hairy as well. The nose can be black or red depending on the coat color. The eyes are almost transparent and the tail should be carried docked. The coat is soft and shiny, covering the entire body and with abundant hair on the posterior part of the legs.
The English Springer Spaniel is overall a devoted worker and companion. It can develop strong bonds of companionship and affection to its masters and feel the instinct to protect everyone recognized as such. They are sociable dogs although should never be left alone with small animals because of their hunting nature. They are well natured dogs that enjoy outdoor activities and exercise as well as the permanent company of its family. They need to have a firm leader to follow.
