With a name that can be easily confused with the one of other breeds, the English Shepherd is still one of the most incredible, unique and beautiful dog breeds that you can find. This dog is not of exact English or British descent but it is instead of Roman descent since registries of this breed are found even through the times of the ancient Roman Empire. It is believed to have been transported to the Islands of Great Britain by Caesar and there is where it took its current characteristics. This dog belongs to the herding group which was its original task for which it was bred. It is recognized by many important dog associations but not by the AKC.
The English Shepherd is a medium sized dog whose average measurements are 18 to 23 inches tall and between 45 to 60 pounds of weight. Its body is compact and square shaped with a touch of elegance and a refined bearing. The legs are rather short but strong and muscular while the tail is long and fully covered in abundant hair. The chest of the English Shepherd is broad and perfectly proportioned to the rest of the body. As for its head, it is of medium size with a slight stop and a somewhat pointy muzzle. The ears are folded over the head, the eyes are expressive and dark and the neck is really strong and muscular. Finally, the coat is one of this breed's most beautiful features since it is extremely shiny, soft and silky. It is available in brown, black and brindle combinations.
Just like it happens with most herding dogs, the English Shepherd displays a marvelous temperament that combines full energy, bravery and complete devotion to its masters. They are deeply obedient dogs that require firm and strong leaderships in order to achieve the best results when working. They are also great family dogs since they can develop strong affectionate and protective behaviors. They love children and will not be a problem with other dogs and animals.
