Breed InfoOne among the many breeds of gun dogs, this one has some particular characteristics that are worth commenting on. The many varieties of spaniel make it necessary for a clear description to identify and distinguish this type. In many countries this breed is famous as Cocker Spaniel simply. Nevertheless, the distinction is worth making a comment on since England is the country of origin of the breed. There were many spaniels in the past in England, the two main categories being the water and the land spaniels. Any spaniel that was considered to weight less than 25 lb. was thought to belong to the category of cocker spaniels. This does not happen nowadays, where the distinctions among breeds do not depend upon weight only. In the past, this breed was famous for its elegance and it was shown in many competitions. At the beginning of the 20th century a club was formed in America to represent the dog abroad. Later on the English Cocker Spaniel was taken as a whole different category. This is a quite solid but well balanced, at the same time, breed. The most outstanding characteristic is the hair and its softness. It is famous for its crème, reddish hair and its curls. His expression is one of awareness and at the same time warm. No one can resist the look on a Cocker spaniel’s face. The average size to be recognized by the many dog association standards is for the males not more than 17 in and for the females no more than 16 in. As regards weight, it should note exceed the 33 lbs both for females or males. The English Cocker Spaniel is a playful, interesting dog to consider. They are good by nature and they show it all the time. Aggressiveness is not an issue in the case of this breed, as you may have imagined, and they are really tender dogs to have in a house with kids. They are not bad tempered at all, they like children, and what is more important than anything else is that they like being around their masters. Although their reduced size would suggest they are ideal for small places, do not be fooled. As regards health, this breed does not present may problems. The most common ones are kidney disease and in some cases ear infections due to the length of their ears. If taken care properly, they will have no major problems. |
