Dog Breed InfoThe English Bulldog. Even thought these dogs has a wild and hard to dominate fame among the vast majority of pet owners, you should know some real facts about them and start doubting about what cartoons have always showed you. Are you ready? To make a fresh start, we must concede that in its early origins the English Bulldog was bred to fulfill hunting and violent activities. It is believed that the name comes from a special square game in which the dog had to kill a bull by biting his neck and suffocating him, proving in this way the hardness and fierceness of the dog. This activity was called bullbaiting and was developed in Great Britain (where the breed was originated) until the nineteenth century, when it became forbidden. This situation caused the breed losing some of its most aggressive behavior and features and this is why nowadays it is one of the most loving dog breeds you can find. The ban that fell upon this game also caused for the breed to almost become extinct, but some breeders kept it and made it reach the modern times. If we have to talk about the appearance of this dog breed, we must mention in the first place its small and stocky body, its short and strong legs and its broad and big head. However the most typical feature of these dogs is not the body but the face: a big and wide mouth and a saggy skin that makes them look like they are permanently sad or discontent. The eyes should always be black, rounded and far apart from each other, while the ears should be settled high in the head and folded upon themselves. The nose should be black and big as well, with visible nostrils. The coat of the English Bulldog is short, smooth and should be found in colors such as red, fawn, brindle, white or any decreasing tones of those ones, but never black. The weight should be between 40 and 50 pounds and the height among 12 to 14 inches. When it comes to Bulldog’s health conditions, you must take care of a couple of items: in first place, this breed should not be put in extreme climates, whether cold or hot because they suffer from breathing problems (which may cause heat strokes) and are not entirely able to adapt to the changing temperatures. They may also present digestive conditions, as well as skin infections, allergies, cataracts, and heavy snoring. We hope that with this English Bulldog information you have reconsidered your thoughts about this breed. Isn’t it lovely? |
