When we have to talk about famous cartoon dogs, there are many to mention. But there is only one that claims the virtue of being almost everywhere, with a laid back and somewhat lazy attitude. Droopy Dog is one of the most popular dogs in America and is a clear referent to a time in which animated cartoons became extremely popular not only among children but also among teenagers, young people and even adults. Today we are going to refer to this fantastic animated creation that has transformed itself in an icon and that is familiar to every one without mattering how old the cartoon might be
Droopy Dog cartoon has been created as an animated movie character in 1943 for the Metro Goldwyn Mayer cartoon studio. Tex Avery, its creator, thought that Droopy would be a great character to star in some animated cartoon movies.
Droopy Dog was originally known as the Happy Hound (which would clearly be an irony if we see Droopy’s temperament) until 1949 when it received the name that made him utterly famous. It was characterized as a slowly speaking, laid back and almost sad yet intelligent dog that could quite profoundly irritate his enemies with that slow motion movement and simply by being able to escape every situation in which they put him in hoping to never have to see him again.
With a peculiar sense of humor, this dog become one of the icons of America’s cartoons shows and movies and this has allowed Droopy to star in many movies among which Dumb Hounded (1943), The Shooting of Dan McGoo (1945), Wild and Woolfy (1945), Northwest Hounded Police (1946), Señor Droopy (1949), Wags To Riches (1949), Out-Foxed (1949), The Chump Champ (1950), Daredevil Droopy (1951), Droopy’s Good Deed (1951) and Droopy’s Double Trouble (1951), are just a few options. After Tex Avery departure from the Metro Goldwyn Mayer, the character changed hands and the posterior movies in which we see Droopy were directed by Dick Lundy and Michael Lah: among them we find titles like Caballero Droopy (1952), The Three Little Pups (1953), Dixieland Droopy (1954), Deputy Droopy (1955), Blackboard Jumble (1957) and One Droopy Knight (1957). The last movie in which Droopy Dog starred as a protagonist was Droopy Leprechaun, completed in 1958 and directed by Michael Lah.
Droopy dog cartoon has never been a successful product for animated cartoon TV shows, gaining its major hits on the big screen. However reruns of the animated TV shows are sustained throughout time and kids from different generations and different places all over the world have had the chance to enjoy this slow motion dog that is the terror of his enemies.
