Breed Info

The Dogo, also famous for its other names, Dogo Argentino or Fighting Dogo, is a dog with some unique characteristics. This dog is thought to have been developed in Argentina and it is believed to have been used for hunting games over there.

The unique look is given by its wonderful but short coated style. No more than 68 cm is the average height for males and 60 cm the average height for females. What may happen with females is that they may turn out to have longer bodies than males. The extraordinary thing about these dogs is the head with its powerful eyes and it upturned nose. The ears tend to be cropped, according to the places where the breed is brought up, and the tail is tried to be set low at the base.

At the beginning of the 20th century a man named Martinez, decided he wanted to have a dog but not only to be good for guardian purposes or just a company for the family. He also wanted a dog capable of hunting and taking down boars or jaguars. This may seem a lot to ask, but he eventually managed to achieve it. To breed Dogos, he had to mix the Cordoba Fighting Dog, Great Danes and Spanish Mastiff, and finally the Dogo Argentino came up.

As regards temperament, as mentioned before, these dogs continue to be used in South America and in Texas as well.

The Dogo Argentino may present some aggression problems due to its mixture of breeds. For this reason, it is believed that there are breeders that only raise them for fighting purposes, of course through the use of illegal fighting. Apart of the cruelty of these fights, the fact that it is illegal makes it somehow more appalling.

Aggression is looked for and somehow changed in this breed , since their primary purpose is that of hunters, generally in a pack. For this, aggression may be a rather negative feature, since they may turn to each other accidentally.

These dogs have a special temperament, they are known for being extremely affectionate and they enjoy being around the family or group of people where they grew up. They will have no problems with children since they tolerant and they do not represent a hazard as many people think. On the contrary, their loyal, intelligent nature makes them excellent partners for guardian as well as for company purposes, as mentioned before.
