Breed Info

This breed of dog is one of a kind. The Clumber Spaniel was developed in Britain around the 19th century this breed has many distinguishing features to be looked at in detail.

The history of the Clumber Spaniel is fascinating and rare. There are many theories that suggest that the breed originated in France, not in Britain. When the French Revolution was at its height the Duc de Noailles gave the group of puppies to the Duke of New Castle. From there on it became British.

But the strongest one claims that the British were the real breeders. There are older breeds of Spaniels that may suggest that this is yet another type of British Spaniel. What is a hundred per cent true is that the name comes from Clumber Park. The breed started to be shown around the year 1859, specially in competitions, and they are even mentioned in Queen Victoria’s diary. What else can you ask for ?

Although it did not have that amount of fame in the United States, an officer of the British regiment introduced the dog in America. An American Kennel Club was formed and from there on, the breed has gained worldly reconnaissance.

He is considered a gundog, but he is not as fast as many others are. For that reason, they are also considered for hunting and they are also bred for retriever and tracking purposes. Clumber Spaniels are loyal, loving and they like to be around their owners all the time. When around strangers he may not feel at ease. For that reason, they are good for guardian purposes.

Puppies are said to be curios and they want to explore the whole house in five minutes. Be ware of shoes and lose items which can be completely torn to pieces in a matter of seconds. Drooling and snoring are also common features of the Clumber Spaniel, and this may be the need for water. So, whenever you see your dog drooling around he house it may be a good idea to try to calm him down and make him drink some water so as not to dehydrate. As regards facilities, they need a lot of space and they also need daily exercise to keep fit and alert.

There are some important aspects as regards health that should not be forgotten. Hip dysplasia has been terrible for the breed, and hypothyroidism as well.
