Good Dog

Chow Chow name comes from the Chinese _expression Pinyin, which means lion dog, a distinct feature of this dog since his coat and head resemble those of a lion. His small rounded ears do nothing but to accentuate this commonly wide spread belief.

This broad but small dog is one, among many, of the dogs with a really thick coat. Its coat can be from three different colors, red the most common one, black, and cream. Any mixture of colors is not accepted as a standard of the breed.

Do not get afraid when you see his tongue, its unique blue – black tongue may scare you, but this is something typical of the breed.

When you think about companion dogs this bred may call your attention. But be careful, this is not a common dog.

They are quite difficult to train and they tend to be rather independent. So, if what you are looking for is a friend this may not be the right choice.

As similar heavy dogs, the Chow Chows are likely to suffer from hip dysplasia. And due to their excessive amount of hair round the face they may also suffer from entropion, which is an eye irritation. To avoid these diseases it is important to take care of your dog constantly.

Remember that one of the things that may these dogs problems is the large amount of hair they have. Grooming, combing and weekly baths are a must when it comes to the daily care this breed requires.

If you are not confident on what you can do the best thing is to take him to the vet. There he will receive the necessary cares to be treated correctly.
