The coat of a Chinook can almost take full Care of itself, requiring little to no grooming. Chinooks have a double coat, the first being a down undercoat and the second a coarse overcoat, each coat having it's own characteristics to aid with the dog's well-being and help with daily Chinook Care.
Whilst in general Chinooks do not shed their coat regularly, it has been known on several occasions that Chinooks shed very heavily twice a year, lasting one week. However, a small amount of owners have noted that that their Chinook sheds heavily all year round.
Usually, the Chinook breed is a very healthy one, although it can still suffer from certain health conditions. Fortunately, the majority of health implication that the Chinook can inherit are minor, not life threatening or can be successfully treated. For example, Chinooks are known to suffer from excessive shyness, eye abnormalities, hip dysplasia and hormonal skin problems, all of which can be treated by a qualified Veterinary surgeon.
A Chinook should always be allowed to feed on a well balanced diet and provided with the regular exercise they require. If these two main factors are allowed, any future Chinook health complications should be kept to a minimum.
